Policy: What we do

TFG orchestrates high-impact education and advocacy campaigns aimed at increasing tropical forest conservation finance. We do this primarily through our work with UN negotiations on climate change. TFG is an accredited observer to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and is a frequent participant at UNFCCC negotiations. TFG also educates the public about US policy, notably the Tropical Forest Conservation Act (TFCA) and domestic US cap-and-trade legislation .

The Tropical Forest Group is a 501c3 non-profit organization based in the United States and accredited as an observer the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). We have a volunteer team of 17 affiliates (including scientists, artists, media professionals ad conservationists) and have had more than 100 volunteers help out on previous tropical forests campaigns and support for community forest projects (primarily in conflict and post-conflict areas). The Tropical Forest Group had an 85-person delegation at the Bali (2007) negotiations and sponsored a highly successful joint campaign of local Balinese dancers and inflatable towering trees. This work led to massive pro-rainforest media coverage in outlets from BBC to AP, the Jakarta post, Washington Post and Reuters. More...

The UNFCC Conference will be held in Copenhagen in December, 2009, the Tropical Forest Group is building a large scale art installation. As opposed to activist “antics”, we are working to secure permission and support for an expansive, elegant design to show overwhelming support for tropical forest conservation and reducing emissions from deforestation in developing countries (REDD). The US Tropical Forest Conservation Act (TFCA), enacted in 1998, allows certain countries to forego paying back debt owed to the U.S. in exchange for protecting tropical forests. Since 2000, its budget has ranged from $11 to $20 million per year. The TFCA is one of the largest pots of money worldwide to combat a swath of destruction exceeding 50,000 football fields every day.
