The Africa Carbon Livelihoods Trust (ACLT) (www.africa-carbon-livelihoods.org) was established to promote and manage community-based projects in African countries toward accomplishment of many Millennium Development Goals and goals of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). ACLT recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Africa Forum. The Africa Forum constitutes an informal network of former African Heads of State and Government and other African leaders designed to support the implementation of the broad objectives of the African Union and its initiative, the New Partnership for Africa's Development.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the Africa Carbon Livelihoods Trust and the Africa Forum is an historic opportunity to explore ways to catalyze a new community-based land use approach for Africa that drives carbon and philanthropic finance to communities. Prior carbon markets have largely by-passed Africa. This agreement is to facilitate cooperation in addressing Millennium Development Goals through programs to mitigate and adapt to climate change by linking local communities with the world carbon markets. The Tropical Forest Group is providing strategic analysis for ACLT in connection with the creation of a new community-based African carbon credit based on existing technical standards.
